Fulfilled many roles in a startup environment - from sensor system design and implementation, to customer interaction and coming up with novel solutions to challenging industrial problems.- Designed and implemented, as part of a team, a full optical sensing architecture in a marine environment. Took part in the installation of sensors and interrogation system used for process monitoring in hazardous areas. Provided photonic expertise for refinement and design of future installations.- Managed team efforts to develop a novel fiber-optic based flow sensor. Conceived initial measurement concept and guided development and intellectual property efforts thereafter.- Worked with a team to devise a novel fiber-optic based sensor for downhole applications in the Oil and Gas space, leading to an internal development effort as well as a collaboration with a major O&G customer.- Provided technical guidance for several contract optical sensor development projects.- Curated a list of requested software and hardware improvements for the next two generations of interrogator product development.- Interfaced with potential customers to present FAZ capabilities and gather requirements, as well as with vendors to understand requirements for conversion of a product from development to production environment.- Used industry contacts to bring in potential customers and investors.- Facilitated closer relationship between US and Ireland offices by acting as engineering liaison. Developed novel semiconductor laser systems for communications and signal processing. As a member of the Ultrafast Photonics Research Group, under the direction of Professor Peter Defyett, worked with a team to provide deliverables for research contracts through various government agencies in collaboration with industry partners.Built upon previous research to develop, construct, and test a novel frequency comb generation technique utilizing CW frequency laser injection locking of a semiconductor harmonically mode-locked laser. This became the basis for my doctoral thesis. I delivered the resulting frequency comb generator, the novelty of which was an easily tunable comb spacing, to an industry partner as a deliverable for the supporting program.As a deliverable for another program, I designed and built a prototype of a coupled opto-electronic oscillator (COEO). I trained engineers from our industry partner on the principles and operation of the system, and consulted on the construction of a near turnkey version of the COEO.During my CREOL and UP Group tenure, I mentored junior graduate students and collaborated on many research projects, both in the group and with researchers in other research groups. I was able to provide perspective and insight to various projects and topics such as ultra stable laser frequency combs, laser materials processing, semiconductor fabrication, and nanophotonic device design.
