I'm now in my 40th year in the specialized consulting field of property condition assessments. A licensed architect in the state of California since 1991, I’ve been an employee or subcontractor to roughly a dozen due diligence consulting companies through the years, and have had the opportunity to lead training programs on how to perform PCA and Seismic Risk Assessments at several of those companies through the years. I have authored four books on the subject of facility assessments including Building Systems Evaluation Handbook (1991), which was one of the first books devoted to the subject of evaluating building systems; Property Condition Assessment Handbook (2013), which presented ways to design, perform and manage facility assessment services; Zen and the Art of Facility Assessments (2014), which illustrates the practice of facility assessments from the perspective of Zen teachings; and most recently When Bad Things Happen to Good Buildings | Red Flags in Property Condition Assessments: A Reference Guide to Problematic Building Materials and Conditions in the U.S. (2017, Updated 2023).Now in our 20th year, McClain Consulting Services, Inc. is a professional services consulting firm that provides customized property condition assessments throughout the country for commercial property owners, investors and managers.
