Planning Intern
During early 2014, I embarked to the land down under with a handful of other Canadians in the Master of Planning program. I worked closely with this small team and met frequently with City of Melbourne experts regarding the planning and review of the Queen Victoria Market (QVM) & surrounding precinct. Our group quickly found ourselves responsible for coming up with some innovative ideas to present to City officials. We were encouraged to think outside the box and our goal was to impress the Melburnians responsible for the planning & development of the most livable city on earth. Together we rose to the challenge and created a beautiful, well thought-out area structure plan for the QVM redevelopment initiative. We also explored new-age public engagement methods and techniques during our process.I was also involved in a design studio hosted at Melbourne's RMIT Design Hub. Each of us came up with abstract urban planning ideas, which each had a life of their own. The best elements of each idea were combined and, in the end, the City of Melbourne came alive in our numerous master plans and public exhibition at the Design Hub on Swanston Street.
Camp Imaginator
I had the opportunity to work with Calgary's next generation for the 2013 and 2014 summer sessions. These campers were brilliant and enthusiastic, and we also shared many common interests including: film-making, computers, and technology. I worked for The Directors Cut, which is a film camp organization which hosts camps, seminars, and classes for children aged 6-13 all over North America. My camp was hosted at the University of Calgary and we had fifty new campers every week. We used top of the line equipment (MacBooks, iMovie) and shot & edited a movie each week. My colleagues and I were in charge of teaching all about film-making techniques and methods. We had a variety of needs to cater to and it was a life-changing experience to work with children who were as passionate about technology as I am.
Grounds Crew
The Strathmore Golf Course is located about 25 minutes East of Calgary. I worked as a member of the grounds crew in the summers of 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and more recently 2014. Members of the grounds crew are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the course. I worked with heavy machinery and earth-moving equipment. I also helped with irrigation, sod work, and many other projects. During the summer, SGC hosts a number of tournaments, corporate parties, and shotgun starts. My team and I were awake long before the sunrise, preparing the course for play. I was required to be responsible for my machine and independent during most of my day. I thoroughly enjoyed my time working outdoors, and couldn't have asked for better colleagues at the Strathmore Golf Course.
