I continued building/writing about lists ranking the largest companies and all kinds of other stuff related to the Cleveland business community, but in 2018 I began working closely with my counterparts at other Crain's publications in New York, Chicago and Detroit. And I continued to obsess over finding new ways to use the data we collect. For instance, I always dreamed that Crain's one day would have a tool that lets readers sift through the database I used internally on a daily basis. I was charged with helping Crain's Cleveland build on its reputation as the hub for data related to the Northeast Ohio business community and the region's economy. I compiled the lists and directories that Crain's has been assembling for decades, but I was also tasked with finding new ways to use data in print and online.

I covered the high-tech companies tasked with fixing the local economy. It was a broad beat: One day I'd be writing about a social media startup employing three people, and the next day I'd be doing a story on a publicly traded medical device company. I also wrote about how tech trends affected companies in other industries. But sometimes I ignored my title and did other things. For instance, I helped lay out pages and write headlines when needed. I hosted a few panel discussions and participated in a few as well. And in 2013, I launched TechTalk, the first Crain's Cleveland podcast to attract a sponsor.

Troy, Ohio

I did a little bit of everything at the TDN. First, I reported on issues facing school districts throughout Miami County, which is north of Dayton, Ohio. I then switched to the police/fire beat, coving crimes and emergencies on a moment's notice. I also played many other roles: I sometimes took photos, I filled in on the city council and court beats, and I helped lead the paper to victory during the Troy City Spelling Bee in 2006. Still my crowning achievement.

As Editor-in-Chief, led team of 50-plus volunteers and part-time employees to produce daily student newspaper. Learned the ropes of journalism and helped other students do the same.
