Charlie Warner has had several careers. His first was in broadcast sales. He started at the CBS affiliate, WSPA-TV, in 1957. He then went to WTTG-TV and WTOP-TV in Washington, Avery-Knodel and WCBS-TV in New York as a salesman. He returned to Washington as sales manager of WTOP Radio, he then went to CBS Radio Spot Sales in New York as sales manager and became V.P. General Manager in 1970. He was general manager of WWSW-AM and WPEZ-FM, WMAQ-AM and WKQX-FM, WNBC-AM. He hired Bob PIttman as program director of WPEZ-FM when Bob was 19, and Bob went with him to WMAQ-AM and to WNBC-AM in New York. In 1979 Charlie introduced Bob Pittman to John Lack, who Charlie had hired at CBS Radio Spot Sales and who was Executive VP of WarnerAmex Satellite Entertainment Corp. John Lack hired Bob to create a new cable music channel which they named MTV.Charlie got his MA in Journalism from Southern Illinois University in 1982. In 1983 he founded the Mass Communication Department at Menlo College. At the same time, he began his long and very successful broadcast and cable sales and management training and consulting business.In 1988 Charlie became the Leonard Goldenson Endowed Professor at the University of Missouri School of Journalism where he taught Media Management and Leadership, Media Finance and Economics, Media Sales, and Creativity in Journalism. He also continued his consulting and gave sales, negotiating, and management seminars for all the major broadcasting and cable companies and major station groups, including, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, Belo, Gannett, and Clear Channel.In 1998 Charlie was hired by Bob Pittman to help restructure AOL's Interactive Marketing Division. Charlie retired from AOL in 2002 and became a part-time associate professor in the Media Management Program at The New School in New York City.He is also the author of the best-selling textbook in the field, first titled Broadcast and Cable Selling, then for four editions, Media Selling.
