I was tasked with monitoring construction sites across the project spread, for compliance with the project Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) to manage and minimise negative environmental effects during the construction process.Formally I was employed with Coffey Construction Ltd., working across Ireland within their water and wastewater treatment plant operations and maintenance department where I gained valuable exposure to Ireland's pharmaceutical, construction and water treatment industries and the exciting challenges posed by these sectors. I hold a master's degree in environmental engineering and a bachelor's degree in environmental science and have a keen interest in the areas of resource recovery and reuse from waste streams, novel approaches to renewable energy and the conservation of natural landscape, wildlife and ecological resources. Environmental Clerk Of Works (Ecow)
I was employed as an Environmental Compliance Monitor (known as an Environmental/Ecological Clerk of Works or ECoW in Ireland), for the Environmental Department of Somerville-Aecon Energy Group, specialists in the construction and maintenance of large diameter steel pipelines for Canada's Natural Gas Industry.As an Environmental Clerk of Works I was tasked with ensuring that construction work met the compliance requirements of the Project Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) and works were undertaken in accordance with legislation, best practice, and stakeholder/regulator requirements.My role also required monitoring environmental compliance on our sites as a Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead (BC-CESCL) monitoring Erosion and Sediment Control (ESC) measures employed throughout spreads 3 and 4 of the Coastal Gaslink Pipeline Project for our client TC Energy. I worked in tandem with our ESC Installations crew to install, monitor and maintain control measures to manage/minimise negative environmental effects during the construction process and to ensure compliance with the project CEMP. The Coastal GasLink Project is a 670-kilometre provincially regulated pipeline, currently under construction in Northern BC Canada. When completed it will safely deliver natural gas from northeastern B.C. to the LNG Canada facility in Kitimat, B.C. for further export to Asian markets.
Environmental Clerk Of Works (Ecow)
I joined the Environmental Department of Somerville-Aecon Energy Group (SA Energy Group) in July 2020 and took up my initial role as an environmental compliance and quality control inspector (known in Ireland as Environmental/Ecological Clerk of Works or ECoW), monitoring Biosecurity on spread 4B of the Transmountain Expansion Project (Oil and Gas Pipeline Construction) in Western Canada. The Transmountain Expansion Project is essentially a twinning of an existing 1,150-kilometre pipeline between Strathcona County (near Edmonton), Alberta and Burnaby, British Columbia.As an Environmental Monitor working with the Biosecurity team, I was primarily tasked with implementing the Biosecurity measures outlined in the Environmental Plans set out by Transmountain to ensure equipment cleaning and sanitation procedures and other biosecurity protocols were implemented during project construction on a site-specific basis to prevent the introduction or transfer of crop disease, weeds, and pests. In addition to implementing the Biosecurity measures outlined above, I also assisted the Environmental Manger in the data logging and reporting of the following:• spill reports• water haul logs• hydrovac logs• socio-economic reporting• greenhouse gas reporting
