Research of inherited retinal disease in the Next Generation Sequencing Laboratory• DNA isolation from patient peripheral blood samples• Next generation sequencing using the Illumina platform to detect genetic variants• Completed a research project based on variant interpretation using the ACMG guidelines with a particular focus on deep intronic variants. The project involved creating a managed variant list and resulted in an improved variant filtering system on the Alissa software to determine a patient’s true disease-causing variants of inherited retinal disease. This positively impacted the laboratory’s day-to-day work of variant classification due to reduced turnaround times.
