Publishing Director
Communications Director
For more than ten years I directed global communications for Sports Interactive (SI), the London-based creator of the hit football management simulation game, Football Manager (FM).Leading an in-house team of 12 – and directing an international network of agencies, territory representatives and distribution partners – I was responsible for maintaining and growing the reputation of an established brand in both mature and emerging territories through all communications channels; owned, earned and paid. In addition, it was my responsibility to devise and execute communications strategies that delivered sustained sales growth through the FM product family's annual release cycle.Working closely with our parent company, the global game publisher SEGA, I managed an annual budget in the region of $5.5m.During my tenure at SI, FM grew from being a ‘local hero’ in the UK to a global phenomenon; ROW sales currently account for more than 65% of the game’s global performance, with three recently added territories (Germany, China and South Korea) now firmly established in the brand's top five markets.
Consultant
I advised and worked with a number of companies, including Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group and Peter Gabriel's Real World Organisation, on a variety of digital media projects. Between 2009 and 2011, I worked closely with the League Managers Association, developing and editing its quarterly business magazine The Manager and with Club Wembley, editing the Club Wembley Journal. I also worked with the McDonald's Corporation on the restructuring of its internal communications portal.
Co-Founder And Director
I co-founded and managed Eye Cubed, a video game production company, with the former worldwide Head of PC Game Development for Take-Two Interactive, Luke Vernon (now Development Director of Devolver Digital). Eye Cubed operated in a similar fashion to an independent film production company, sitting between the development talent and the route to market. In early 2006, Eye Cubed signed a €4m deal with Atari Europe to produce The End of Reason, a first-person shoot 'em up for PC and Xbox 360. The game's development came to an abrupt halt in late 2007 when a change of ownership at Atari led to a new corporate strategy and an exit from the 'boxed games' market.
Co-Founder And Director
I co-founded the boutique communications agency Bastion in 1992 with the former Marketing Manager of Commodore Computers and General Manager of Ocean Software, Dean Barrett. The agency grew rapidly throughout the 1990s to the early 2000s, where it turned over approximately £1.75m per annum. Bastion's client roster boasted a number of 'household name' companies, including Sony, Microsoft, Virgin, Time Warner and Disney. Bastion, which continues to operate successfully, was involved in the early stages of European introduction of both the PlayStation and Xbox.
