Ciaran Birmingham Work Experience Details
  • Roadbridge Ltd
    Senior Engineer
Roadbridge Ltd Jan 2021 - Present
    Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland
As part of the IED Dredge & Demo contract in Dublin port I was involved in the classification of contamination in the Alexandra Basin for contamination. Alexandra basin is being dredged to a deeper depth to allow the berthing of larger ships as required by the Dublin Port master plan. There are significant historical levels of contamination associated with activities in adjacent graving docks and Tara mines ship loader. There is strict environmental constraints associated with the project as Dublin Bay is designated UNESCO biosphere. My role was to classify the material using the available borehole information and develop a strategy to safely store the material. A design for a lined bunded cell was developed as part of this plan using stabilised and treated dredge material. I also ensured robust testing was carried out to ensure compliance with the environmental licence. I also organised bathymetric surveys at regular intervals to analyse dredge quantities.

As design manager I am responsible for working with our supply chain and procuring materials and resources to complete packages of works. I have worked with precast concrete suppliers to develop solutions to utility chambers which ensures that works can proceed in a lean and safe manner. I have coordinated and developed the design with suppliers, engineer and utility providers for several pumping stations for storm, foul and process water. The philosophy onsite is mitigate risks to health and safety and to the schedule and quality by constructing offsite and ensure a lean a safe construction in so far as possible. Consistent with this approach we have embraced the modern methods of construction including the use of efficient data flow and identifying problems before they become a reality by using BIM. I critically analyse design from a construction perspective work with all stakeholders including supply chain to develop innovative solutions and while balancing the constraints of quality, cost and schedule I seek to implement these solutions through the change control process. Other facets of my role include acting as the Temporary works coordinator for all Roadbridge scope and controlling quality onsite.

Part of this included adjustment of the superelevations to bring within tolerance. I also was involved in identifying the risk levels at railway crossings and implementing change to the design to control this inherent risk. As there was a contractual requirement for BR to supply materials including ballast and sleepers I had to engage at an early stage with local suppliers to ensure a ready supply and stock as we hit peak production. I also had regular meetings to control and to ensure agreed quantities were maintained and quality was to specified standards.Responsible for materials logistics and Quality on the job. Ensured adequate rate of delivery of ballast and sleepers and worked with supplier and contractor to successfully improve ballast quality. Set out and managed the construction of several retaining walls, platforms and stations including the construction of four in situ concrete lift shafts. A significant part of my role was planning works and managing resources, this included directing several subcontractors during a period of contraction in the Irish construction industry. Monitoring and controlling costs and quality would create conflict at times and learning to deal with this in a professional manner was an important part of my career. As site engineer on a utilities diversion I managed and planned the enabling works to divert an existing road in an urban setting. This was high risk works as traffic management on the road needed to be maintained. There was a significant risk from underground and overhead services with the largest substation in South Dublin alongside the route. A significant part of the role was controlling safety and also identifying areas where the 'character' of the works had changed from what was originally planned. Detailed records including allocation sheets and the tracking of volumetric analysis ensured that costs were covered on this challenging project. As site engineer in Alexandra Quay Dublin Port I worked on the upgrading of existing port container yard to allow mechanised container stacking, including all upgrades in port infrastructure, pavement and drainage.
