I've been doing software support for over 30 years, in Bull SA, then in a start-up, and currently in Rocket Software. To be a good supporter you need to be reactive, and to have a wide range of skills. I say that I'm "Task Driven", but I generally have to multitask, so I suppose I'm also event-driven! A good supporter always has a more long-term project running, which may require visits to client sites, or working with a new product.I've done a lot of work with Unix, Perl scripting, shell scripting. I write HowTo guides - like IBM's Redbooks. I like to share my knowledge.
