And now for something completely different! What with 60 being the new 40 and all that, in 2019 I decided to train as an ‘English as a Second Language’ teacher. I had dabbled with moving to Cádiz a couple of years before and what better place to train. I trained with the wonderful and very knowledgeable team at Active Language and, a year later, they were kind enough to offer me a part-time teaching contract which I was delighted to accept.Teaching is fulfilling and invigorating – I like it a lot. But, the unexpected bonus for me was that learning how to teach has provided the perfect bridge between my technical and management role at Macnamara (below) and my new venture (above) in security training and consultancy. And, of course, remaining determined to bite off more than I can chew I want to do more language teaching too.

I joined Einstein (formerly Television Education Network) as IT Manager and was soon promoted first to IT Director and, eventually, to Chief Operations Officer. As well as running a team to manage the internal IT for a busy TV production company I led the drive to get our programmes into digital form and online. At Einstein I learned how to run IT teams focussed on delivering both on-going business support services and complex one-off projects and/or research projects -- the ability to analyse and deliver on business requirements remains a key focus for Macnamara ICT.

This was an important role for me because it was here I realised not only that I had some aptitude for IT but that I enjoyed it too. Of course this was early days for IT in general not just for me, and if I knew then what I know now I wouldn't even have attempted some of the projects I was able to pull off. My experience here taught me that there are no mysteries in IT, that it can all be understood through the application of effort and logic and a large dose of common sense! Based on this I still place a huge amount of emphasis on IT demystification -- communicating with clients in a way they can understand easily.
