I specialise in geotechnical engineering design to Eurocode 7 and other related design codes, reinforced soil design to BS 8006-1, ground investigation design and monitoring, structural surveys, training, research and development, and general civil engineering design.Example projects recently completed and ongoing include:- Design and monitoring and advice during construction of a bespoke reinforced soil wall system complying with BS 8006-1 for a major precast concrete manufacturer.- Design of soil nailing schemes for a number of unstable slopes in varying geologies.- Checking of designs for reinforced soil solutions using state-of-the-art geosynthetic solutions.- Advice on construction options for a car park over peat and soft clay deposits near the River Shannon.- Design of drainage solutions for a major port project.I currently serve as chairperson of the Geotechnical Society of Ireland and sit on the NSAI TC015 SC7 Eurocode 7 working group, tasked with the ongoing review of Eurocode 7 and updating the Irish National Annex.

I completed and defended a thesis entitled "The influence of lubricant slurries on skin friction resistance in pipe jacking" based on my research over a four year period, which was a combination of field, laboratory and analytical work. My thesis was supervised by Associate Professor Trevor L.L. Orr and my work was funded by the Irish Research Council.Thesis summary:The use of bentonite and polymer slurries as lubricants to reduce jacking force has long been established practice in pipe jacking and microtunnelling, with reductions in the skin frictional resistance component of jacking force of up to 90% being reported. The objective of this research was to improve the understanding of the mechanisms of action of these pipe-jacking lubricants. A novel triaxial testing apparatus was developed which allowed for the injection of lubricants onto the interface between rough concrete and a soil that is shearing at the constant volume interface friction angle. It was shown from the results of laboratory testing that the main beneficial effect of pipe jacking lubricants is the reduction of the radial effective stress acting on the pipeline through the generation and retention of excess pore water pressure in the soil near the interface. Results were compared to field case history data and conclusions are drawn. Additionally, the jacking forces observed during two recent microtunnelling projects in rock in Ireland are presented and analysed.

During my time at TCD I also worked as Teaching Assistant for the Microsoft Project module of the Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management and 3rd & 4th year Geotechnical Engineering laboratory, tutorial and numerical modelling modules within TCD’s BA, BAI in Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering.In order to improve my teaching skills, I completed the TCD Centre for Academic Practice and Student Learning (CAPSL) 12 week module “Teaching and Supporting Learning” which gave a strong foundation in learning theory, preparing lesson plans, providing student feedback and engaging with students.

Site supervision and management of the directional drilling aspect of the Cloughfin Long Sea Outfall project. The trenchless works involved the installation of 568m of 355mm OD HPDE pipeline using a 250T maxi HDD rig & gyroscopic positioning system in a sensitive coastal location. The pipe string was assembled in Larne port and towed to location. This is the largest directional drilling project attempted on the island of Ireland to date.

Victoria Lock, Meelick

Part time seasonal position operating the lock gates at Meelick on the River Shannon. Responsible for collecting lock fees, maintaining records of vessels using the navigation, cash handling and completing daily returns. Recording of daily water levels and rainfall amounts.

Mullingar

Site supervision of civil and microtunnelling works on Mullingar Sewerage Improvement Scheme valued at €56m. Main elements of works included interceptor sewer in sizes from DN 600mm to DN 1800mm, a large storm water retention tank and the upgrade of a wastewater treatment plant from a PE of 20,000 to 50,000. Duties including site-based design work, surveying, checking of contractor setting out, inspection and handover of completed pipelines and RC structures, vibration and settlement monitoring and supervision of 24 hour slurry shield microtunnelling works under a live railway line. Scheme awarded the 2013 Environmental Infrastructure Project of the Year by Engineers Ireland.

Responsible for all aspects of PJ Hegarty subsidiary company HMC Geotechnical and Piling's subsidence remediation, micropiling and grouting works. Responsibilities included design of scope of works and preparing tenders for projects, supervising works, organising plant, materials, subcontractors and labour, managing quality, safety and environmental aspects of projects, invoicing and settling final account.Assisted in supervision of anchor installation and CFA piling, including witnessing of static load tests on ground anchors and CFA piles.
