As a strategist, communicator, listener, researcher, and doer, with years of experience leading change, I know that, for better or worse, organizational values are what drive results. Ethical values are not a given -- they are sadly rare -- it is easy to embrace short term, self-interested (“but what is in it for me?”) approaches to organizational “leadership” in our transactional world. We’ve all experienced it, and the results are predictably poor. Values based approaches are transformative because they create clarity, purpose, and a way forward — people can invest themselves fully. Values based approaches to leadership, (accountability, transparency, honesty), nurture communities that can get big things accomplished based on shared goals. Transparent reporting on agreed upon strategies and progress toward shared goals (whether the news is good or not) is the only basis for long-term positive change. It may sound like “eat your broccoli,” but good outcomes are usually achieved by committing to do the hard right thing every day. Throughout my career, I have worked with leaders to drive values based approaches to achieving long term results for organizations on a mission to do good.
