With a degree in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts, I spent several years pursuing painting and sculpture while working at various low-paying and sometimes interesting jobs. Quite by accident I found myself working at a large New York City publisher learning book design. I loved the world of books and loved learning graphic design. I also really liked being able to make aliving with art. For several years I freelanced at publishing houses both large and small. Eventually my husband and I left New York City for the western slopes of the Catskill mountains.Living on an old farm with horses, dogs and chickens, I was surrounded by wide open meadows with long views. The buz of the city was replaced by the rumble of the farm tractor and the roar of creeks. Here I found what I needed to be creative. Sometimes cold, always beautiful this rural place gets me going. My muses like it too.Living in a farming community has given me the opportunity to do design work for farmers and agricultural organizations. Being passionate about farming and sustainable agriculture has made this work a labor of love. Living in a farming community that also has a significant population of artists, writers and musicians makes for some unusual juxtapositions that I really enjoy.Likewise, in my studio, where I am most happy when I have a range of work on my desk. Perhaps a scholarly book from a university press to design will sit next to a flyer for a dairy, livestock and grazing conference or a book cover about a baroque french mystic will share desk space with a rack card for a slaughterhouse. For me, good contrasts are key to dynamic art and life.
