 Recognizing that I am more people-oriented than computer-oriented, I began a career in cosmetic retail sales. As a beauty consultant, set up appointments with potential and existing clients to teach them about skin care and color application techniques by talking them through the process of skin care and makeup application as they actually apply the products and use them. I organize and host skin care classes of up to six potential clients, teaching them about skin care. I follow up with all customers at least quarterly via phone or through appointments if they need instruction or additional advice that cannot be handled via telephone. I use an MS Access database to maintain client information and generate reports and deliver products as ordered.

MUMPs programmer for the first four years; Release Manager for three years; IS Project Manager for three years. Aadapted to the environment and needs of my employer. In this last position, I successfully managed projects to change the way the software release management department did business by using oral communication skills to persuade key players from various departments to test my ideas of tracking projects. This resulted in increased productivity and the establishment of consistent business practices among various groups. Exercising analytical skills, I performed desktop application QA testing and used interpersonal skills to act as a Desktop Application liaison between developers and end users. Developed classes and trained users to effectively use applications. Organizational skills and an eye for detail afforded me the ability to maintain, edit and update technical documentation. Acquired a working knowledge of MS Office products in the process.

As the organization’s Resident Manager, I lived on the premises to oversee this battered women’s shelter during non-business hours, by admitting victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, counseling them, establishing a schedule of chores for resident women, leading support groups and enforcing house rules. Responded to incoming crisis calls during non-business hours, including visits to the local hospital where victims were being initially treated.As the Education Coordinator for this non-profit organization, I was responsible for informing the community about the causes and affects of domestic violence and sexual assault. I set up speaking engagements with local agencies, educating them on the signs and cycles of abuse and how to escape abusive situations.

Wrote and maintained FORTRAN programs for U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. Lynchburg, VA office closed in December of 1992.

 Wrote and maintained programs comprising the Fire Control System, installed in the US Navy submarine fleet to launch and track weapons and countermeasures.
