Developed a new organization, OPTI, to combat emerging offshore industries that threaten coastal and ocean environments based on the public trust doctrine and incorporated SODI sea otter issues in AK and CA under the umbrella of OPTI.Analyzed state and federal government policy and scientific and legal information on AKand CA species management identifying remedies for better stewardship.Coordinated with environmental organizations, members of Congress and state officials in response to the threat of the Corps of Engineers’ processing of an offshore wind permit application which violated public trust principles.Partnered with environmental coalition combating efforts to weaken federal duties to protect migratory birds and marine mammals.Steered debate over offshore wind development into one that supports meaningful and effective wind energy development without setting adverse precedent or harming ocean resources.Refocused debate on offshore wind development from the argument of “not in my backyard” to the factual issues of recognizing public trust values which will result in a comprehensive wind/renewable energy program. Authored a “Voices” column featured in the Earth Island Journal distributed nationwide.Developed campaign grant proposals and secured and administered funding for Oceans Public Trust Initiative and Sea Otter Defense Initiative

Based on my role during the 1988 gray whale rescue event, provided comments and notes along with verbal descriptions of events concerning and surrounding the whale rescue to director Ken Kwapis and leading actor Drew Barrymore for development and production of Universal Pictures motion picture “Big Miracle” (Movie).Consulted with Universal Pictures domestic media department regarding press work and development of my Oceanmiracle website to address current environmental issues impacting marine mammals and ocean ecosystems.Coached Drew Barrymore on the history of the whale rescue and my personal approach for addressing situations resulting in successful outcomes so she could more accurately portray the character based on my role in the event for “Big Miracle.”Initiated and assisted in organizing the rescue of three stranded gray whales in pack ice off Pt.Barrow, AK. Conceptualized the plan implemented by GP International resulting in the Russianssending icebreakers to free the whales.Interviewed by domestic and international press during the red carpet premier of “Big Miracle” and other media outlets during the release period, e.g.; the Anderson Cooper show where Drew Barrymore and myself were interviewed together discussing the rescue event and our work together pre-production of the movie.During various interviews, I was able to call attention to the plight of our oceans and wildlife today and that we need to mobilize on an international level to save whales and the oceans. Created and maintained effective relationships with director, producer, cast and crew on the set of “Big Miracle” and provided feedback on scenes being filmed.Interviewed on camera by the Movie publicist and provided an overview of the historical event and that I hoped the audience would take away the message from “Big Miracle,” that individuals coming together can accomplish great things, which is included in the special director’s segment on the Dvd.
