Duties as a full-day pre-K teaching assistant have included the usual tasks of assisting in carrying out the curriculum set forth by the teacher and pre-k administration, as well as offering my own original ideas that support the curriculum. The classroom teacher has been delighted to incorporate these ideas into our daily plans year after year. I am involved with classroom preparation and maintenance, discipline and behavior issues, parental communications, testing and assessments, paperwork, classroom calendars and newsletters, and bulletin board displays both inside our classroom and in the staff room, office and main entrance of the school. I attend monthly team meetings and give valuable input as to the progress and needs of the students.

I was recruited to apply for a position as Kindergarten Teacher after earning an excellent reputation as a kindergarten teaching assistant the year before. I was interviewed along with a pool of other qualified applicants who were certified teachers and although I did not hold a teaching degree, I was chosen to fill the position. As a kindergarten teacher, I created interactive lesson plans to combine play and academics to meet NYS standards. I prepared fun and inspiring lessons, incorporating movement, singing, games, arts and crafts, reading books and role play.

Head teacher in the service department of a large company marketing an at-home language program called Disney’s World of English. Duties included planning and teaching interactive classes and seminars all over Japan; telephone English conversation lessons; writing articles for monthly newsletter; English consulting, editing and proofreading; workshops for mothers; selecting winners of English competitions; performing at company English “carnivals” and many miscellaneous projects. Also taught English to adults at other companies such as Sumitomo Heavy Industries, IBM Japan, KDD, Purina Taiyo, Microdata, Toshiba, as well as teaching private students of all ages.

Responsible for coordinating a youth program for 150 children at Near Eastside Adventures, a neighborhood youth center. Duties included organizing and planning the curriculum for afterschool and summer recreation programs; recruiting, training, and supervising up to 50 college volunteers per semester; running a summer in-city day camp; co-directing a week of overnight camp; overseeing preschool, teen and athletic programs.

Full-time volunteer with the Community Service Corps teaching preschoolers and working with youths ages 5-18 at Hawley Youth Organization. Also coordinated and supervised a homework/tutoring program for elementary school children. Developed a new preschool program at Near Eastside Adventures Neighborhood Center (responsible for all aspects including publicity, registration, formulating goals and objectives, and teaching the class). Also started a teen recreation group at the same site.
