When meeting people for the first time and sharing what I do for a living or visiting with parents at conferences, it is more common than not for me to hear “I was never very good at math!”. Imagine someone saying “I was never very good at reading!”-not likely. Knowing this is a common belief that people have about themselves and their math experience, my priority has been to develop activities, create an environment of “all answers are good” (even if incorrect), and share simple data to show students that whatever their previous history, they can be successful in my class. I learned the value of this philosophy from my own struggles with the math classes I had to take in college. Students have told me that my class was the first class they felt like they really “got it”. Our job as educators is not to “weed students out”, but allow them the opportunities to find joy and provide support to them in the discovery of learning something new-even if it is difficult. As I’ve worked with adults, this fear of learning something new or unfamiliar is more difficult to work through-for a variety of reasons. My goal is to use my experiences in the classroom to find and create a variety of approaches and techniques to help adults learn what is vital to their success in their workplace.
