Dollars for Change is a small, grassroots organisation dedicated to bringing positive change to communities in need by supporting and implementing development projects specific to the community’s needs. It works directly with the community and proves that anyone and everyone can be a part of these efforts. 100% of donations go directly to funding our projects in Kurland Village which focus on youth development, education, and community development.DFC was founded by Katie Rutherford, who is also the Director. She has a B.A. in Anthropology, and was a WWISA volunteer at the end of 2006, working at the Kurland Crèche when she decided to incorporate DFC.Dollars for Change educates American students about poverty in the world today, and motivates them to to contribute just one US Dollar towards specific community projects that we run in Kurland Village – hence our slogan, 1 dollar, 1 person, 1 community at a time.

As the Conservation Education Director I plan, organise and facilitate all environmental education (EE) and community outreach and awareness programmes and projects. I facilitate workshops with teachers and EE and related organisations. The EE programme includes; 17 outdoor classrooms with curriculum linked interpretive booklets, 7 Eco-Schools, national and international Enviro Calendar Events, environmentally themed weekend camps, leadership camps, citizens science projects, resource development, reviewing and upgrading and partnership programmes and projects with national, regional and local organisations. I also run the Bitou EE Forum, a platform I conceptualised, initiated and launched to formalise a collaborative and integrated approach to EE in the Bitou region.Capacity building throughout the youth is very important and I therefore enjoy mentoring young professionals / graduates and assist in their professional and personal growth in the environmental sector.
