Project Engineer

Crown Point, Indiana

As Project Engineer, I am intimately involved with all phases of each project including, pre-sales, design, manufacturing, assembly, post-sales service and everything else in between. I manage a design team that takes care of the customer's project from initial concept and 3D illustrations/animations, all the way through to shop drawings and manufacturing of the final approved design. I hold meetings with our field crew for each project to define all of the critical variables and provide an overview of the project prior to delivery. Our team of designers and engineers ensure the project meets all of the code requirements in terms of structural adequacy and safety, as well as the architectural requirements imposed by the building codes. Collaborating with the architects, owners and business managers is essential to understand the customer's needs and requirements so we can deliver a product that meets exceeds expectations.I have personally established the relationships with all of our vendors to make it seem like our manufacturing operations are vertically integrated. Supply chain management is crucial in an environment with several moving parts. The success of each project is dependent on the planning which includes the various vendors, lead times, logistics, etc. If the project engineer is successful in their role, it will ensure the manufacturing and operations run smoothly to ultimately deliver the projects on time for our customers. Our sales team is driven by what our design team is doing in terms of communication. Our design teams communication is outstanding between the clients (architects, owners, etc.) and the manufacturing department by delivering plans and drawings that communicate the requirements effectively. Our sales team constantly is improving what we deliver to our customers and vendors in an effort to achieve the same goal - effective communication that leads to a successful project.

Manufacturing Engineer

Crown Point, Indiana

Poised to take the company from good to great, I took over the manufacturing to establish an environment critical for success. By salvaging or auctioning obsolete equipment and machinery, re-organizing the facility layout, I increased sales by 400% in a little over a year. The unexpected growth allowed the additional capital to purchase land and design a new building for operations and headquarters. As the Manufacturing Engineer, we received the project shop drawings from the design engineers to produce all of the finished parts necessary as safely as possible for a successful project. Safety is always the number one goal as we approach any project and is the reason why we have never had a safety incident. Simple tasks such as regulating uniforms, requiring eye protection and having safety meetings improves communication and productivity. Each successive project taught new lessons as we improved processes constantly. We strive to achieve quality expectations, increase our capacity in order to meet demand, and make the job easier for everyone. As we continued to improve our processes, the time for assembly decreased dramatically for a typical project from 5 days to 2 days using the same man-power. This all starts from manufacturing making it easier for the erectors. The by-product of improved operations is the infectious desire to succeed by everyone. The shop personnel push themselves to do better on the floor, and the designers and engineers push themselves to make the shop personnel's jobs easier. The sales team pushes themselves to meet their demand.I moved from Manufacturing Engineer to Project Engineer to coordinate the operations in an effort to improve sales and profitability. During the first 2 years, I improved sales by over 200% and we continue to grow at a managed pace. Sales and marketing plans are critical for success in any company: creating objectives and goals with deadlines puts the pressure and motivation to have a successful plan.

Nuclear Seismic Component Engineer

Greater Chicago Area

As a component engineer in Nuclear division, I prepared and reviewed calculations that qualified many of the electrical and mechanical components in nuclear power plants for seismic loading conditions. The components were evaluated for seismic loading conditions to prove, that during an seismic event (either natural or otherwise), the plant could safely shutdown without failure of the components.Collaborated with many other disciplines including structural, electrical, and mechanical engineers. Projects included site visits to the various plants such as DC Cook, ComEd's Illinois plants (Byron, Braidwood, Quad Cities, Zion (no longer operational)) to record field dimensions and verify as-built conditions. Other clients/projects include AEP, TVA, TMI, Palisades, Clinton, Browns Ferry, and Prairie Island.I also started a divisional website for the intranet to define our group and present a resume and portfolio of our team to the rest of the company for use in bidding projects. This was still under development when I left.As an engineer for the nuclear industry, the engineering is secondary to the necessary paperwork and documentation for the project. The technical writing and attention to detail are critical to success in this position and industry. With the NRC as acting oversight and control over the regulations of the industry, paperwork and documentation must be precise without error.
