About Cisca Wijmenga

Till September 2023 I was the Rector Magnificus of the University of Groningen and a member of the Executive Board of the University.I am the Lodewijk Sandkuijl Professor of Human Genetics at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and the University of Groningen. My research is to understand the role that genes play in the development of celiac disease, a diet-induced inflammatory disease of the small intestine. This knowledge is leading to new insights into the disease process, and may lead to new treatments and more rapid diagnoses for patients.As the gut also harbours 100s of different bacteria influencing our immune system and metabolism, we are also studying the gut microbiome and it’s role in health and disease using the Lifelines cohort study.To perform more functional studies on the gut microbiome and celiac disease we recreate gut-on-a-chip models. I am a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and the Academia Europaea
