I am a genealogist living in Ramsey, Isle of Man. My primary focus are 7 families whose names are Keig & Skaggs (who were originally Skeig), Oates, Cain(e), Cormode, Curphey & Cretney.In August 201, I discovered that these families descend from the same Viking ancestor who was born in the 1000s. The discovery is based upon Y-DNA which is passed from father to son through the ages. The families all share a number of unique DNA markers which prove they share a common male ancestor.The significance of this discovery is this, there are only 30 Manx families of direct Viking descent based upon Y-DNA. The fact that 6 out of 30, or 20% of the Manx Viking population are direct male descendants of this one Viking would indicate that he was probably very powerful. When we examine the Manx historical record we see that a man by the name of Godred Crovan invaded the Isle of Man in 1079 with a large force & seized the Kingship. Prior to this the Isle of Man was ruled by Fingal Godredsson, Godred Crovan's 2nd cousin. Godred Crovan was present at the battle of Stamford bridge in 1066 fighting for the Norwegian King, Harald Hardrada & was probably the leader of the Manx contingent of King Harald's army. This would indicate that Godred was likely born in the 1030s, the same time period which I estimate the ancestor of the six families to have been born. Furthermore, Godred was the son of King Ivarr Haraldsson, the King of Dublin & was a descendant of the Ui Imarr, a powerful Norse family that can be traced back to the 800s & which would have been of Norwegian origin.Tracing Godred's descendants through time we see that they ruled the Kingdom of Mann & the Isles for nearly 200 years & the majority of the Kings had multiple wives & concubines. We would therefore expect there to be living descendants of Godred Crovan in the Isle of Man, I believe my discovery is congruent with this expectation.I have established a Y-DNA project to test living descendants of the six families with the following goals in mind:1) Building a tree for each family showing how they are all related;2) To go back as far in possible as time using paper records;3) To reconstruct the genetic profile of the ancestors of the families;4) To DNA test the remains of the Manx Kings found in Rushen Abbey & compare them to the reconstructed genetic profile. If my theory is correct, I'll be able to prove it scientifically & for the first time in history find living descendants of a Viking King.
