    Analyzing neural data and synthesizing these results through computational analysis and scientific writing. Animals are very adept at assigning attention to those stimuli in the environment that may predict an important outcome - either positive or negative - but the manner in which the brain orchestrates these behaviors is not fully understood. My research has helped to elucidate this issue by analyzing the activity of individual neurons in a brain area that is essential in mediating these processes, the amygdala. I have recently published four first-authored research papers on this topic in prominent journals.

    Designed numerous computer programs for running behavioral experiments and analyzing data. While the brain's ability to associate stimuli and outcomes has been heavily researched, less is know about how past experience with these associations can influence neural activity unrelated to a particular outcome. For example, victims of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) experience a profound emotional response to stimuli previously associated with a negative outcome, even when those stimuli are completely benign outside of the traumatic event. This research shed lights on the neural processing that might underlie such behaviors. We have published two research papers in prominent journals detailing the results of this project.
