Understanding the complementary and competing needs of the learner and the instructor are key to making strides in the sustainability of learning innovation.Recent projects include:1. Developing a strategic implementation plan for a campus-wide move to tablets for faculty and students including considerations for financing, wireless infrastructure, security, app distribution, and device distribution.2. Creating a training plan for faculty, students and staff to use mobile devices for coursework, student/faculty interactions, anytime/any place courses, and course administration.

Chris Higgins is the Executive Director for Academic and Scholarly Technology Services. He is responsible for leading the unit's efforts in the integration of technology with pedagogy and research to meet the academic mission of the university. This is done by creating and supporting physical and virtual teaching, learning, and research environments; by assisting those who use these environments not only to meet their teaching, learning, or research goals, but also to be innovative in the process; and by fostering relationships with key partners both on and off campus. Collaboration is the key to success for Chris. Chris comes to Chicago after 19 years at the University of Maryland supporting the faculty using technology in teaching and learning. During his time there, he oversaw two learning management system transitions including the most recent move to Canvas, coordinated IT efforts with MOOC development, lead the mobile learning initiative including app development, and research in the use of mobile apps for teaching and learning. He has been involved with the planning of new active learning spaces on campus including being involved in the original design of the Terrapin Learning Commons and the plans for the Edward St. John Learning and Teaching Center.

As Director of Learning Technologies and Environments, I provide direction for the support of both virtual and physical learning environments. Our focus is to provide a welcoming easy-to-use environment for learning whether here on campus or connecting from home or abroad. To do this we technical and pedagogical support for use of technologies for learning and teaching.Supporting the design and development of our campus blended, online, technology enhanced and MOOC courses is a primary activity for my team at this time. Similarly, a growth area for my team is collaborative learning using our video conferencing and online collaboration tools.The focus on the physical spaces is for easy access to the technologies needed for learning, teaching, and collaboration. This includes formal learning spaces such as classrooms and seminar room, and informal spaces for student collaboration. For learning technologies, we support the enterprise tools both faculty and students use on a daily basis. This includes the recent implementation of Canvas as our Enterprise Learning Management System (ELMS).
