I am a historian and philosopher of knowledge, specialising in Renaissance and early modern knowledge-making in general, and Isaac Newton's life and writings in particular. Formerly a Junior Research Fellowship at Linacre College, Oxford, and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Oxford History Department, I am now a Research Professor based at the Centre for Logic and Philosophy of Science at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the PI for the ERC Starting Grant project 'Traces de la Verité: the reappropriation of ancient knowledge in early modern natural philosophy' aka VERITRACE.I have lectured and tutored for History and Philosophy of Science, History of Physics, and The Scientific Movement of the Seventeenth Century at the University of Oxford. I am Transcription Manager and Senior Editor for the online Newton Project (www.newtonproject.ox.ac.uk), and have nearly two decades worth of experience in IT, including Enterprise Architecture, Project Management, and Consultancy, in both healthcare and research. My general areas of interest include history and philosophy of knowledge, AI, digital humanities, intellectual history, the history and philosophy of science, the history of religion, the history of alchemy, early modern history in general and the foundations of modern physics. I approach these topics from an interdisciplinary perspective, focusing on the generation of knowledge throughout the Renaissance and early modern period, roughly 1400-1750.My current academic research project VERITRACE addresses the influence of ancient wisdom writings on the development of early modern natural philosophy. During the Renaissance, a tradition developed that considered particular ancient writings to contain truths about God, mankind, and the cosmos. Johannes Kepler, Francis Bacon, Pierre Gassendi, Isaac Newton, and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, foundational for the development of modern science, all ascribed to this tradition, and with them many others; yet so far no comprehensive account exist of exactly what they took from these ancient wisdom writings and how the idea of a perennial truth influenced their knowledge-making. VERITRACE addresses this by deploying bespoke techniques for distant reading on a large corpus of early modern printed works. It traces how the most prominent ancient wisdom writings returned in the natural philosophical discourse, what exactly natural philosophers took from these writings, and how these writings functioned in the economy of early modern science.
