While building brands and businesses is part of my job, being a “marketing guy” has never been how I think of my role. What interests me is being able to tell stories - the ability to make people think about things in unique and different ways.Take for example, my work at Gunn Automotive. Rarely did we feature a car - and never a price - in our advertising, even though we were selling cars. Instead, we would show people living their lives; a mother and daughter coming out of a store with their shopping bags, people tailgating at a college football game, a family reunion, all while while playing music instead of talking. And people began to understand that it wasn’t about the car, it was about their lifestyle. We were creating a deeper connection with people. The experiences of working in health care, the automotive industry, broadcasting, as an educator and, even when doing field work in Egypt, have helped shape a personal perspective where people are usually more alike than different. And rather than defining myself by the titles of these jobs, it is being able to tell the stories that explain the values of these organizations that tell you what I can do.
