Profile bio

About Cathryn Kolka

My background in physiology and biochemistry allows me to apply a systems biology approach, investigatiing communication between organs and tissues in clinical and preclinical models. My studies originally focused on metabolic disease, and the role of the vasculature in modulating metabolism and maintaining the tissue microenvironment. The role of the microvasculature specifically can promote metabolism, supply nutrients, and in disease, impaired capillary structure can impair metabolism and alter the interstitial environment. My previous studies have assessed access of insulin to the interstitial space and shown decreased access may be involved in obesity and diabetes. Increasing access by improving endothelial transport or the distribution of blood flow could present an alternative target for treatment. I have now expanded this experience to investigate cancer biology, and specifically the contribution of lipid metabolism and immune responses on the pathogenesis of esophageal adenocarcinoma, and triple negative breast cancer models. I have used omics approaches, supported with immunohistochemistry and cell models to uncover mechanisms by which cancer cells can avoid cell death, modify the tumor microenvironment, and adapt to challenges.

Listed skills include Research, Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, Physiology, and 7 others.
