- Designed and optimized structural and functional mitochondrial assays in a multidisciplinary team of doctors and clinical trial coordinators to understand the mechanistic causes and progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).- Developing a novel model of mitochondrial dysfunction to identify novel therapeutic targets for AMD.- Optimized and standardized protocols for generating mitochondrial-tagged retinal pigment epithelial cell lines to study mitochondrial structure in response to various chronic mitochondrial dysfunction causing insults.- Utilized flow cytometry to measure ROS, mitochondrial membrane potential changes, and performed cell viability studies using appropriate fluorescent conjugated dyes.

Trained and mentored 30 undergraduate students each semester for heme biology research course that involved demonstrating basic lab techniques, giving research presentations, conducting quizzes and journal clubs.

- Identified heme-binding domains of a yeast transcription factor Gis1. Discovered the heme-dependent regulation of transcriptional and demethylase activities by optimizing the protocols for demethylase activity using in vitro fluorescence-based assays.- Standardized and developed protocols for purification of therapeutic heme-sequestering peptides and recombinant-tagged yeast proteins to perform heme-binding and functional assays. Routinely purified endotoxin-free HeSPs with yields up to 100 mg from 4 to 8L of bacterial cultures.- Collaborated and contributed to diverse projects that involved assessing the efficacy of heme sequestering agents in the progression of NSCLC using non-invasive bioluminescence imaging.-Worked closely with the office of research as a safety advocate and ensured lab safety by following and implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Good lab practices (GLP).- Managed and procured lab supplies. Carried out IBCC protocol registrations and renewals following the university guidelines which meet or exceed the standards outlined in the NIH Guidelines.
