About Clair Mckinney-Williams

Extremely creative footwear and accessory designer with over 20 years of experience. Commercial designer, designing collections from the initial design concept all the way through to final production. Currently company director for What's Up Birdie? a bespoke fashion accessory business.Where I design and hand make beautiful accessories and teach workshops on how o make footwear andaccessoires.From November 2003- March 2020 I worked at the Design Asylum which is the design, and manufacturing company that creates Irregular Choice, Poetic Licence and Bed Of Roses. I was the senior designer for Poetic Licence, Bed of Roses and Irregular Choice kids footwear.Poetic Licence and Bed of Roses are commercial, ladies fashion collections of shoes with a feminine vintage twist. I created both brands, including all of the graphics used for the branding. I work across all aspect of the brands from the initial trend research to sourcing materials, working with the pattern cutters to final sampling in the Far East and Portugal.Irregular Choice kids is an extremely colourful, fun yet practical collection of children's shoes.Previous to working at the Design asylum I worked as a milliner for Philip Treacy, working on the ready to wear and couture collections.I am extremely hard working, happy to work as part of or managing a team but also comfortable working on my own.I naturally have a fun, colourful, feminine, fashion, vintage, glamorous, quirky yet commercial design handwriting but I am also very adaptable to other styles.I enjoy working in all aspects of design as well as the making/technical side.     I solely designed the Irregular Choice Kids, Poetic Licence and Bed of Roses collections twice a year with two interim collections in between. Bed of Roses and Poetic Licence are collections that are ladies’ styles with a vintage, fun, classic twist. The collections were created to add a more commercial look to balance out the crazy colourful Irregular Choice styles.My role includes the following:• Research trends, present idea’s, initial hand drawn sketches and mood boards to the company director.• Select, develop new constructions, fabric/leather swatches from our suppliers in Portugal and China, discussing price and costings.• Design and draw up selected styles on illustrator/photoshop including any new prints, embroidery’s and appliques.• Present collection to company director and range builder.• Write up tech packs for each design giving detailed specifications on illustrator and excel.• Work with factories on a critical path for first samples to be made for sales meeting. • Liaise with factory sample rooms on prototypes, amending patterns, constructions, lasts and heels where needed.• Work on first prototypes and samples with tech team on fit, general making, eliminating any foreseen problems before styles placed for production.• Present collection to company director and sales agents, follow up any amendments with factory and pass over to the tech/production teams.• Make sure any material changes are followed up through production.

    I had full responsibility for designing, sourcing materials, new sole units/kits and briefing the factories for the production of the S/S 2004 Doodles canvas Children’s range.Designed prints based on the themes predicted for S/S 2004. The prints were produced in England and the Far East. I also worked in collaboration with an Italian tannery to develop some of the prints onto leather, which were used for the S/S 2004 girl’s sandals.Worked within the women’s division for 3 months as design assistant
