Profile bio

About Claire May

An experienced programme development and grant management professional taking on varied roles over the last nine years in the charity and private sectors. I am experienced in managing and developing grant portfolios of 50-100 grants with total budgets of £40-50m, securing six and seven figure grants from institutional donors. This knowledge complements previous work overseeing and increasing organisational income from trusts and institutions by 300% and developing programmes at a smaller charity. At Relief International, I developed a project portfolio across Asia and the Middle East with an income of £41m on health, education and development initiatives winning six and seven figure grants from US, UK and European governments, the UN and the EU. Currently, my work administering and managing a portfolio of over 100 green infrastructure investment grants (totalling £55m) at PIDG has increased my understanding of grant management in the private sector and green energy finance. I am a proactive and engaging team member who is not easily flustered and prefers getting stuck into a problem, bringing people together to solve issues and improve systems. I am adept at cultivating relationships and producing high quality grant applications for USAID, FCDO/DfID, BHA/OFDA, EC/ECHO, GFFO, Sida, BPRM, WHO and UN bodies. In addition, I have worked closely with a variety of in-country teams in some of the most disadvantaged and conflict-affected nations (including DR Congo, Sudan, Pakistan, Syria and Bangladesh). I have adapted my style and support to fit a range of needs often providing in-person training on grant management or coordinating consortium grant applications with other NGOs and agencies. At both Peace Direct and Relief International I sat on senior management teams developing successful business strategies which increased income, efficiencies and promoted greater collaboration. I have managed others in-person and remotely. I have created applications and budgets for multimillion pound projects, complied and reviewed project reporting, provided detailed KPI reports for Boards and managed consultants. Thematic interests and expertise include, humanitarian service delivery, green infrastructure and energy, gender and women’s empowerment, youth employment, agricultural development, human rights and peacebuilding.

Listed skills include Fundraising, Strategic Communications, Report Writing, Research, and 33 others.
