At AII I have a supporting role for a number of projects, including small business proposal development, website design and upkeep, and weld design. The novel impulse welding technique AII is based around, vaporizing foil actuator welding (VFAW), is the key technology of interest I learned about in my research assistant role at the IML, and have applied more thoroughly in my role at AII. Beyond my work in researching the ways VFAW can improve or replace current welded structures, I have learned more about the ways VFA technology can be applied for other purposes including embossing, shearing, and forming. The small size of AII has given me valuable insight to the world of small business development, including recognizing financial support systems, pitching a product or service to the right recipients, and market research that yields results.

• Evaluated weldability of newly formulated wires using visual inspection, spatter testing, and both destructive and non-destructive testing• Investigated solidification cracking susceptibility and mechanisms of filler materials using unique crack tester and metallographic insights

As a research assistant, I prepare and perform testing for graduate students regarding impulse welding tests and preparation of samples for analysis. I’ve gained skills using heavy machinery such as band saws and CNC mills, as well as proper metallography technique.

Internship working with the weld procedure team in one of Caterpillar’s dozer manufacturing plants. I collected PQR data using prints, procedures, and 3D models, helped update new procedures, and investigated robotic welder connectivity issues with online data reporting. I was also certified for Visual Weld Inspection and 3G and 4G GMAW welding.
