About Claire Garretson
Currently majoring in Communications & Media Studies and French, and minoring in Business Management, Marketing and European Studies at Washington College, and intending to pursue a career in external communication, public affairs, or health communication. As a communications and marketing student at Washington College, I have taken classes such as Principles of Marketing, Communication and Media Theory, Organizational Behavior, and Media and Politics, which have given me practice applying various marketing, public relations, and communication skills. My involvement across Student Government, Peer Mentors, and Greek Life, along with my experiences as President of our Model UN team and leadership honor society Omicron Delta Kappa, and as a class officer have given me many opportunities to develop management and advocacy skills beyond my major. I seek to apply these skills across communications contexts after graduation. In addition to studying communications and marketing, I have continued my French studies in college and am entering my eighth year as a student of the language. For the summer of 2022, I worked as a Brand and Digital Marketing intern for GE Healthcare, where I worked on a dynamic team of marketers in the process of rebranding a major corporation. I contributed to foundational thought leadership and social media research, partnered with media agencies to obtain and review resources, learned and applied practical Excel skills, contributed to new web design content, partnered with independent contractors, and met professionally with a variety of marketers, public relations specialists, communication directors, and senior vice presidents of marketing, communications, storytelling, and thought leadership. I presented my findings, projects, and deliverables from a ten-week internship to senior leadership, and my work will be implemented as GE Healthcare continues to spin off into GE HealthCare. In the summer of 2024, I expanded my experience in health care to the Washington, D.C. nonprofit community through my internship at the Society for Women's Health Research (SWHR). In my role as a communication and policy intern, I supported content creation across social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and X, and contributed to policy and advocacy work specifically in the area of raising endometriosis awareness and support for the Endometriosis CARE Act, developing preliminary materials for cardiovascular disease resources, and contributions to live and recorded topical webinars with experts and public figures.
