I provide English / literacy teaching/tutoring to individual and groups of deaf children or adults, carry out Specific Literacy Needs assessments to identify deaf children who are also dyslexic, support deaf students in Higher and Further Education with academic language and literacy and provide consultancy / bespoke training on deaf literacy.

I returned to the classroom in order to re-hone my teaching skills. At the same time I undertook private tutoring and was English Consultant to Exeter Royal Academy for the Deaf until they could fill the post of Lead Teacher in English on a permanent basis. This private work grew and led to me founding Purple Porpoise Deaf Literacy.

I also led the development of a unique, new, Language Profile that showed, at a glance, an individual student's comparative progress in nine aspects of language development, including reading, writing, English speaking and listening, speech production, lip-reading and the production of, and receptive skills in, BSL and SSE.Within SMT I was responsible for overseeing Out of Class Learning and led a joint-enterpirse week long project to improve the school's outdoor space in which the pupils wored with volunteers from a local IT company to install a new amphitheatre, plant flower beds, install split-level wooden benches and paint, and install, artwork on outside walls of the school. I managed the national FYD activities programme of projects and deaf awareness training, ensuring that staff located in other regions had the support they needed in order to carry out their regional programmes. I also led the London and South East regional programme and carried out research in order to identify what young people in the region wanted from FYD, identifying that there was a need for pre-vocational training in order to help prepare deaf clients for work.

I organised, supervised and managed the national projects programme that aimed to get deaf and hearing young people participating together, on an equal footing, in fun projects throughout the UK, including Sport Festivals, Camping Weekends and Wateractivity Days. I also trained FYD volunteers in project management and child protection.
