I taught two courses in my position as a lecturer at McGill University: Popular Music after 1945, and Rap Music & Hip-Hop Culture.Popular Music after 1945 is a survey of Euro-American popular music in the 20th and 21st centuries. It engages with critical concepts in the field of popular music studies as they apply to major artists, genres, and styles. Students leave the course having developed their listening skills, honed critical thinking skills, and with a broader appreciation of popular music in and as history.Rap Music & Hip-Hop Culture offers an overview of rap music and hip-hop culture from its roots in the 1970s to the present day. It considers how hip-hop is part of the fabric of contemporary popular culture, considering issues like race, gender, locality, generation, and sampling. SSHRC Project: "Popular Music: The Modernist Turn" Supervised by David BrackettThis research project involved looking for intersections between popular music and jazz, especially instances where popular music gained prestige for its associations with jazz. I was responsible for a significant amount of primary source work: I reviewed issues of the magazine Jazz from the years 1965 and 1966 for articles that addressed or mentioned these pop-jazz connections.
