About Claire Mcleish, Ph.D
Music, Culture, and HistoryMy career has been devoted to researching, writing, and teaching popular music and culture. Having recently earned a PhD in Musicology at McGill, my research interests include the diverse topics of music copyright, hip-hop, music sampling, and visual media.I joined Third Side music in September of 2021, where my position straddles the Copyright and Business & Legal Affairs departments. In this new role, I am leveraging my scholarly knowledge of music copyright for real music industry applications--finally digging into the complex and fascinating field I had studied for so long.My PhD equipped me with diverse skills, such as forensic musicology, university-level teaching, academic and journalistic writing, parliamentary procedure and governance, and project management. My time in graduate school also gave me an intimate knowledge of the context of higher education. Since my pivot into the music industry, I have been expanding my skillset to include a detailed knowledge of music publishing, performing rights organizations, copyright data management, and engagement with several types of publishing contracts. No matter which hat I'm wearing--musicologist, teacher, researcher, or administrator--I perform my duties with an eye for detail and a commitment to excellence.

Course Lecturer
I taught two courses in my position as a lecturer at McGill University: Popular Music after 1945, and Rap Music & Hip-Hop Culture.Popular Music after 1945 is a survey of Euro-American popular music in the 20th and 21st centuries. It engages with critical concepts in the field of popular music studies as they apply to major artists, genres, and styles. Students leave the course having developed their listening skills, honed critical thinking skills, and with a broader appreciation of popular music in and as history.Rap Music & Hip-Hop Culture offers an overview of rap music and hip-hop culture from its roots in the 1970s to the present day. It considers how hip-hop is part of the fabric of contemporary popular culture, considering issues like race, gender, locality, generation, and sampling. Learning outcomes include greater confidence with terms from music theory, an understanding of the evolution of hip-hop throughout the decades, and tools for performing close readings of hip-hop songs, music videos, and films.Popular Music after 1945:Winter 2020Spring 2019Winter 2019Spring 2018Winter 2018Rap Music and Hip-Hop Culture:Fall 2019(Syllabi available upon request)
