About Claire Stone

Do you want to attract more of the right kind of customers, grow your business, and do the right thing at the same time? Are you feeling overwhelmed with sustainability and unsure where to start but know it’s important? Then come to my workshop on 30th July in Bristolhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/how-to-tell-your-sustainability-story-carbon-reduction-workshop-bristol-tickets-929321334127?aff=oddtdtcreatorWhat's more: when you try to write something on LinkedIn but you end up sounding like some weird formal AI bot? That's when you need me. I write the stuff that you would write yourself, if only you had the time and skill to make it sound like, well, you. How did I get here and why should you believe me?I spent 4 years working closely with the founder as part of the team at The Plastic Free Shop in Bristol before going freelance. In that time, we grew from operating out of a small bedroom into a fully fledged sustainable ecommerce business, with a team and premises - whoop - and selling our plastic free products to happy customers around the country. As part of this small team, I took on a number of roles, learning a wide range of new skills, from marketing, product photography, animation, logistics, stock control, working with partners and supplier and planning. I discovered a love of communications with our customers and re-ignited my passion for writing. Who knew that reducing plastic could be so exciting! Before that, you'll have to have a look at my experience - I'm a generalist so I've done quite a lot, some of which might feel a tad random. Throughout it all, you see that I believe we are all equal - every single one of us. This belief is woven into everything I do and ensures that the writing and content I create works for everyone.I work with small business owners who need a bit of support, but who might not know exactly what that support is until they get started. I'm adaptable and have a huge and random set of skills so while you might need me to write some copy for you, don't be surprised if I help improve the odd process, spot a gap in your marketing plan or boost your skills with a little training. Outside of this work, I'm a keen outdoor/winter swimmer and have completed 2 10km swims. Yes, it's a long way, and no, I'm not very fast, which means it takes me a very long time. But that doesn't matter because I'm very determined, which compensates for a multitude of lacking swimming skills.Drop me a message and we can get you talking about your biz in a slightly more relaxed and 'you-sounding' style.

I loved the variety that working at The Plastic Free Shop brings. One minute I was writing a newsletter to our customers, and then I would be taking product photos for our online store or for a social media post. Or I would be busy packing hundreds of plastic free parcels using more skills than a Tetris champion, and then sit down to evaluate sales and stock levels of a range of products. I'd then research sustainable products and suppliers before placing orders for stock and developing and maintaining partnerships with charities and other businesses. The variety of work, while always maintaining a focus on doing things better was a key part of what I loved about The Plastic Free Shop.
  • Mocean.
    Event Assistant
    Mocean. Apr 2016 - Nov 2018
What can you do when the talented owner of a brilliant employee engagement company needs a spare pair of hands for a short event, and knows that you love people and are nicely enthusiastic? You jump right in of course, and I ended up assisting Mick and his team at a number of events between 2016 and 2018. Each event was different, and required a different skill set, but each and every session required a quick understanding of the client, the people involved and their goals for the session. A can-do attitude as well as the confidence to know when to use initiative v asking was vital - ensuring the event ran smoothly from pre-event prep, set up, welcome, activities, awards and pack up was the goal to making sure our customers had an absolutely brilliant time.
  • Thismug.Life
    Co-Founder
    Thismug.Life Sep 2017 - Sep 2018
    Bristol, United Kingdom
A short lived business with a long lasting legacy. While developing the business (and ultimately deciding it wasn’t viable - happy to chat about that over a nice cuppa) I undertook to pick up litter every day for a whole year and share a photo each day. It turned out to be a hard, but worthwhile endeavour and folk really enjoyed my hard work, and often ended up doing their own litter picks too!thismug.life created reusuable, carry-able and gorgeous enamelware mugs (think traditional camping mugs with a modern twist!) Our mugs were customisable making them a sustainable and brilliant alternative to the usual plastic promotional materials. We also created our own designs - including a gorgeous campervan, Good Morning Sunshine and Free as a Bird (amongst others).

I also authored an ebook (no longer available, but I can send you the copy if you want it!)The Juice Party: Add zing to your life in a super simple and healthy way. The book was a resounding success, mainly because it was initially on sale for £1.
  • Nyr Organic
    Senior Consultant
    Nyr Organic Nov 2009 - Nov 2011
The less said about this the better. I loved the company and products, but was hopeless as a salesperson. My talents are better used when I’m not required to sell...
  • Penny Brohn Cancer Care
    Pa To Ceo
Penny Brohn Cancer Care Apr 2004 - May 2009
    Pill, Bristol, England
I began temping at Penny Brohn (or The Bristol Cancer Help Centre as it was then) during one of the off seasons while snowboarding. I was initially employed to support the CEO as his PA as well as to assist with a Capital Fundraising project and then returned after my final snowboarding Winter to become a permanent PA to CEO. The role was varied, interesting and required a level of organisation that still astounds me now, especially when I consider that a big portion of my time there was spent being pregnant, and then returning to work on a part time basis while looking after my children.Working as PA to CEO of this world famous complementary cancer care centre was brilliant.
  • Sunday River Skiway
    Snowboard Instructor
    Sunday River Skiway 2002 - 2005
    Sunday River, Maine, Usa
A back injury gave me the opportunity to do something different, so I took the slightly unconventional decision to train as a snowboard instructor (don’t worry - my chiropractor thought it was a great idea!) in the USA. After attending a training course in Mammoth, CA for one season, I then jumped to the eastern seaboard and joined the team at Sunday River. A serious knee injury in my first year made for a tricky start, but I was invited back the following season, and thrived teaching snowboarding to beginners through to intermediates, in the age range of 5 yrs to over 70 years! I was awarded Snowboard Coach of the Year in 2004 thanks to my excellent approach to teaching and was often the coach selected when we had important visitors to the resort. I’m not sure if it was my exotic Bristolian accent, or my mature yet fun approach to snowboard lessons, but being outside every day in temperatures well below zero while teaching slightly famous folk to snowboard was pretty cool!
  • Title Research
    Case Handler
    Title Research Feb 1999 - Dec 2001
    London, United Kingdom
I was Probate Case Handler, dealing with international research to locate beneficiaries to Intestate Estates. This incredibly interesting role involved using my language skills to dig deep into local history, speaking with family members, historians, researchers and record keepers. I thoroughly loved learning probate law for England and Wales and developing relationships with a wide range of people to find the rightful heirs to long forgotten estates.
  • University Of Edinburgh
    School Secretary
    University Of Edinburgh 1997 - 1999
Straight out of uni, I moved to Edinburgh with neither a plan nor a job. I signed up to a temping agency, and my very first placement was with The School of Chemical Engineering at The University of Edinburgh. I stayed for two years, leaving only to move in a southerly direction
