In my role as a Research Assistant at the Water Institute at UNC Gillings School of Public Health, I work on a systematic review studying concentrations of heavy metals in drinking water across low and middle income countries. In the early months of my position, I performed full reviews of research articles to determine their relevance to the study. This initial role was valuable for learning more about the project as well as best practices in water measurement, water health across the globe, and water terminology. Thereafter, I transitioned to a role in data extraction, where I carefully gather data such as toxic metal concentrations, water types, measurement methods, and more from research articles deemed relevant. This task requires a high level of detail and the ability to perform calculations in Excel to determine accurate descriptive statistics and concentrations. Over several months, I became reliable and proficient with data extraction allowing me to be entrusted with quality assurance tasks such as validating the work of other research assistants. Currently, I continue to work part-time and am constantly adapting to the project's needs.
