29 years professional experience in project coordination, customer service, administrative assistant, office management, and leadership roles. I started at South Coast Plaza in September 2010, as one of two administrative temps filling in for the Tenant Coordinating admin who had been in a life-threatening accident. I had zero construction experience at that point, although my father was a civil engineer for the City of L.A. and LAX, and my brother had been in architecture and drafting for several years. My boss showed me how to do two reports, a daily night work report, and a weekly tenant construction project report. I learned everything else about the job backwards. In other words, I would receive a call from someone from another department saying "Ordinarily around this time, the admin would do such-and-such." I would say "Okay, I will figure that out and get right on it!" I made myself indispensable, and the Plaza kept me on after the original admin came back to work three months later. When my boss left the following year, our new boss hired me permanent and got me more involved in the coordination of landlord demolition projects. Our first project together was the demolition of the Borders Books space, which was 12,000+ square feet on Level 1, and 13,000+ square feet on Level 2 of the Plaza's Home Store Wing at Bear Street. We put the project out to bid, hired a contractor, and got the job done. And, just before the project was complete, we had to pivot and run all new infrastructure to the space, including HVAC duct work, plumbing, and electrical. We learned a ton on that project, and kept going stronger and better for the next nine years until the pandemic in 2020. While I have a lot more technical knowledge and experience to learn, I have proven that I can learn a job as I go, with a supportive team willing to offer training and guidance along the way. I can interface seamlessly with personalities on all levels, from the trades person to the corporate client representatives, which is not always a given in the construction industry. With so many moving parts and differing personalities involved in one project, it can be a difference-maker to have a team member with diplomacy, empathy, and compassion. I am seeking to be that team member with a diverse company that is committed to the training and development of its people to build a winning team.
