The charity is raising funds to equip a unique, state-of-the-art facility working to develop new radiotracers for use in cancer, cardiovascular and dementia imaging in a new Cyclotron and Radiopharmacy Unit at Castle Hill Hospital, Cottingham, which could become the leading UK site for this new technology. The Daisy Appeal has completed a huge amount at the hospital, building an £8m research centre, which opened in 2008, and creating the £4.5m Jack Brignall PET-CT (Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography) Scanning Centre in July 2014 which uses a state-of-the-art flow-edge Siemens scanner and accommodates more than 2500 scans per year. Currently all the scans are undertaken on patients with cancer. The second and final piece in the jigsaw will be the construction of a £7.2m Cyclotron and Radiopharmacy Unit sited next to the existing scanning centre, this will allow the continuation of the work in even more detail. The cyclotron gives the capacity to create the radiotracers as needed, making the facility able to detect the early signs of cancer, cardiovascular disease and dementia. Until now such imaging has only been possible in a selective research environment. The aim is to make the technology available to all patients, thereby improving their clinical care. The charity is working with scientific colleagues at the University of Hull and the facility has the opportunity to become the leading UK site for this new technology. In excess of £12m has been raised since the charity started in 2002 and it is on course to raise a further £1.6m to complete this final phase in the development.
