Andrea Mitchell Center Undergraduate Fellow
As a 2021-2022 Undergraduate Research Fellow, I was awarded $2,500 to complete my independent historical research project, "(Dis)placed: A Story of the War on Southeast Asian Refugee Youth in Philadelphia from 1975-2000," advised by Dr. Eiichiro Azuma of the History Department and the Asian American Studies Program at the University of Pennsylvania. In April 2022, I presented my project findings during the Andrea Mitchell Center's 15th Annual Undergraduate Research Conference Project Description: Drawing from oral histories and archival material, this project will tell the story of how newly resettled Southeast Asian refugee youth in Philadelphia navigated their neighborhoods fraught with neoliberal under-resourcing, racism, bullying, and violence. As they formed gangs to assert their own sense of belonging and to protect themselves, the War on Drugs and the War on Crime against poor Black and Brown youth quickly swept these subjects of "American rescue" into prison, demonstrating how—for these refugees—the war truly never ended. This story contextualizes the lives of over 16,000 formerly incarcerated Southeast Asian refugees now facing deportation and the struggle to free the Southeast Asian refugee community from the ongoing violence of American imperialism.

2020 Census And Gotv Canvasser
A member of the 2020 Canvasser Field Team, I support VietLEAD as a canvasser in Pennsylvania-wide “Get Out The Count” (GOTC) and "Get Out The Vote" (GOTV) initiatives. My responsibilities, aside from primarily doorknocking and phonebanking in the greater Philadelphia area, are supporting the team with logistical support and recruiting volunteers. Our canvassing efforts included a COVID-19 check-in which allowed the VietLEAD health team to directly support community members with mutual aid efforts, in addition to civic empowerment education on the 2020 Census and the 2020 Primary Elections.

I was responsible for creating the theme for the SASC Summer Institute (SASC SI), a five-day mentorship program for Southeast Asian high school students at the University of California, Berkeley, scheduled to occur in June 2020. I also organized SASC SI's curriculum of 12 to 15 workshops on information, issues, and concepts pertinent to the Southeast Asian American community that would have been attended by the high school students and their college-aged mentors. SASC SI 2020 was canceled due to COVID-19 disruptions.
