The Green Spaces Agency is a public agency acting like a land trust to buy and conserve open spaces, farmland, and forestland in the Greater Paris Area. Our 26 000 acres of forestland are fragmented, often polluted, and surrounded by urbanization; in this complex environment, the goal of my department is to manage our woods sustainably for enhanced ecological value and economic revenue.My responsibilities as head of the forest department include:- Work with the National Forest Service to produce Management Plans for our 20 forests- Coordinate a team of field foresters to implement timber harvests, develop the use of uneven-aged silviculture, and monitor game pressure & forest health- Share information on forest management with external stakeholders and internal audiences- Maintain and expand PEFC and FSC certification

The Center for Woodland Stewardship is a public agency that provides forest management assistance to landowners. The Northern office consists of a team of 25 field foresters and environmental engineers. My responsibilities there included:- Visit local woodland owners and provide them with management prescriptions on silviculture, pathogens outbreaks, reforestation, agroforestry- Develop a working partnership with farmers and NGOs to focus reforestation efforts without threatening good farmland- Coordinate a European Union project between foresters in South Britain and Northern France to share best practices on climate change adaptation

The Yale School Forests Office owns more than 11,000 acres of forests in Connecticut, Vermont and New Hampshire. All of them are "working forests" managed to be financially self-sufficient, ecologically healthy, and to provide a living laboratory for our students.My work there included:- Inventoried, mapped boundaries, designed silvicultural treatments, and marked timber sales for +1,000 acres with a team of 11 apprentice foresters;- Wrote Management Plans for a 100-acre forest in Vermont and a 110-acre family forest in Connecticut;- Inspected sales during and after harvests to check the implementation of BMPs;- Researched and compiled data for timber sales and certification audits.

Viewed from space, the East Coast is a strip of nighttime lights stretching from DC to Boston. Except for one last dark spot: the "Quiet Corner". These 500,000 acres are one of the last vestiges of New England’s forests. But this area of great natural value is a mosaïc of small owners who lack the resources to manage it.The Quiet Corner Initiative develops new ways of integrating the management of complex landscapes, matching students with family forest owners to maintain healthy working lands.Outreach and extension work included:- Met with local owners to develop partnerships with our students- Organized workshops for forest owners, farmers, and conservation professionals- Wrote a Management Plan for a 100-acres family forest- Designed harvest plans and helped mark small timber sales

Greater Paris Area

Many large public forests in France have become surrounded by urban areas and perceived as spaces for leisure rather than spaces for production. But like any working forest, they still need to be regenerated and managed.My work on this issue was:- Wrote an extensive report analyzing the economic and social characteristics of suburban forests;- Interviewed field foresters, forest engineers, community leaders and logging industry representatives on 41,000 acres of working forests around Paris;- Visited "sensitive" sales, analyzed Management Plans and Lanscape Sensitivity Plans.Commissioned by the Regional Forester in a context of crisis, the study led to a consultation with local representatives and the creation of a permanent Suburban Forests task force in 2012.
