I gained valuable insight into the workings of the Foreign Service by listening to the experiences of my bosses, all retired FSOs, and by attending events put on at the Foreign Service Institute.

I worked with International Teaching Assistants (ITAs) who needed help improving their English language skills. I met with each for two hours a week to do exercises, go over course work for their English classes, help them improve their teaching skills, and acclimate them to American culture. Every two weeks, I wrote a report detailing the activities we did and progress made. In addition to course work and linguistic exercises, we engage in fun activities like watching American TV shows, going hiking, and trying restaurants in the area around USC and in downtown Los Angeles. Working with the ITAs requires patience, understanding, and an ability to work through language barriers to find comprehension and common ground.

I provided support to the sales team during the busy summer sales season. This involved coming in early and unpacking newly delivered stock, folding it, hanging it, and keeping the stock rooms organized. I helped expedite the sales process by finding items for the sales team, clearing dressing rooms, making appointments to see sales team members, answering phones, and ringing up customers at the register. I also increased the efficiency of the whole store by returning items from my department to other departments and delivering items from my department to other areas of the store when requested.
