About Clara Byom

Clara Byom is a Multi-instrumentalist, Musicologist, Educator at The Klezmer Institute. She possess expertise in music education, piano, music, music theory, classical and 10 more skills. She is proficient in Yiddish and Spanish. Colleagues describe her as "Clara both worked with me as my assistant in my photography business as well as a piano teacher for our youngest son, who has austism spectrum disorder. As my assistant I would best describe her as "RADAR" from M*A*S*H. She would hand me things before I asked for them; she anticipated every move before I would ask her and always was on track. I was grateful to have her by my side wedding after wedding. As the piano instructor for our, less than easy son, she was no less amazing. When he would give her grief, she would give him new and exciting alternatives to keep the learning process going. She even re-invented a board game and based it on musical facts, then brought her own brother along to play the game with our son, to keep him movitivated. Always out-of-the-box with creativity and above and beyond expectations. She is mulit-talented and extremely personable. She would add value to any position or company. I could go on all day. Clara is a keeper."

Two Odd Butterflies, a duo based in Albuquerque, NM, fuses their old world influences into a singular sound that is the sum of their musical encounters. Issa Noor (hand percussion, baglama) pulls his sonic textures from Turkey, India and the Near and Middle-East and Clara Byom (clarinets, piano, accordion) draws influence from Jewish klezmer music, the Balkans, jazz, American folk dance, and western classical music. United by a shared curiosity and desire to explore the ways in which their musical worlds overlap and blend through traditional repertoire, contemporary improvisations, and original compositions, Two Odd Butterflies’ sound can be defined as both melancholy and playful, conventional and novel.

Di Kavene Kapelye, Klezmer Trio Aug 2014 - Present
    Albuquerque, New Mexico Area
Formed in the fall of 2014, Di Kavene Kapelye (Yiddish for “The Watermelon Band”), is a klezmer trio based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Clara Byom (clarinet, bass clarinet) is a graduate student at the University of New Mexico in Clarinet Performance and Musicology; she brings lyrical virtuosity to the melodies. Jeff Brody (fiddle, banjo, vocals) is an application developer, aikidoka, and life-long violinist, who performs with a Yiddishe neshama. Randi Thompson (accordion, vocals) is an optometrist and connoisseur of "strange, foreign sounds", who accompanies with exuberant and emotive playing. They came together as a trio in 2014 having played as—and are still—part of The Nahalat Shalom Community Klezmer Band. All of them love the excitement of playing for dancing. Together, they are committed to a sound that is both deeply rooted in authentic klezmer tradition and alive in the present, a music that exists in that beautifully chaotic tension between the sacred and the profane. The ensemble’s repertoire draws from a wide variety of sources, including material learned at KlezmerQuerque and KlezKanada workshops. The ensemble is strongly influenced by their mentors, Beth Cohen and Margot Leverett.

  • Drip Project
    Collaborative Pianist

    Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul Area
Founded in Spring of 2017, drip project is a collaboration between Tara Priolo (soprano), Kayla Niehaus (horn), and Clara Byom (piano). The trio met while pursuing their undergraduate degrees at Luther College in Decorah, IA and all have recently graduated from master’s programs throughout the country. The ensemble’s repertoire includes new compositions by talented colleagues, as well as standard repertoire for this instrumentation. In these tumultuous political times, we have questioned what we, young artists, can do to support, protest, and contribute to the best of our abilities. Conversations within our community have reminded us that, yes, performing music is resistance. Performing music is solace. Performing music is contributing to the conversation. The meaning of our name, drip project, is two-fold. First, it acknowledges that our project is merely one drop, a starting point, a miniscule contribution to our community and world. Secondly, it gestures towards the fact that drops gather and develop into a mightier body of water, which can erode and cause change. Please join us for dramatic and joyful concerts, as well as thoughtful conversations this summer!
