Southeast Asia

For five months, I traveled through Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Nepal on a budget. I worked hard to book travel and accommodations for two, trying to stay off the beaten path, while exploring must-see places. In Thailand, my travel companion and I found housing while working for an English camp and learned to live like locals. In Nepal, I organized a trip to a remote village, Dharka, where my travel companion and I taught in the schools and installed solar panels for the new school, which is being rebuilt after the earthquake with funds from Shoes for Sherpas. This trip of a lifetime taught me about travel logistics, budgeting, blogging, and communication, as well as the global lessons we always learn from traveling outside of our comfort zones.

Grand Junction, Colorado Area

Leading 1-6 day river expeditions on the Green, Yampa, and Colorado Rivers. Navigating class 1-5 waters in 18-foot rowing-framed rafts and 28- and 33-foot, 30-horse motorized rafts. Organizing and cooking meals for 3-25 people, three times a day. Building and cleaning trips in the boatyard. General maintenance of equipment (boats, gear, vehicles, and facilities) in the boatyard. Training new hires on the river and in the boatyard. I am a Lead Guide, which means that I lead all guides in each of these activities and am usually the highest supervisor available.

Teaching English to ninth- and tenth-grade students in a rural, K-12 school. I also led a climbing club for students once a week, where students learned teamwork through belaying and other simple climbing techniques.
