After working as a full time English teacher in many secondary schools across the north of England, I decided I wanted to promote reading for pleasure amongst children in a more proactive way. I began to organise reading quizzes for pupils from my local secondary schools to attend. The Big Book Quiz was born. This event grew and grew and after so many teachers asked could they get involved, I decided to have a website built so that any school could enter. And so they did and they continue to do so. I now run that alongside my really full time job as reading and literacy coordinator in a secondary school. I have experience of raising standards of teaching and learning across a large English department which resulted in a great increase in GCSE results. After promotion to Assistant Headteacher I worked across a multi academy trust implementing a CPD and QA system which brought about sustained change on a wide scale across the whole curriculum. Much of my work was highly praised by Ofsted. Some of my work around literacy has been recognised on a national scale by Whole Education and I acted as a Co-creator for their Words For All project which now has 45 schools involved across the country. I am a mentor for many of these schools involved in myriad projects which aim to increase the life chances of children though mastery of the English language.
