Transportation Planning Coordinator
Transportation Planner I
Junior Engineer And Team Lead
My time at Mobia Technology Innovations has been a great place to begin my journey as an engineering intern. I have been able to build on many technical skills related to civil engineering as well as soft skills required for working as an aspiring engineer. I have strengthened my skills in AutoCAD drafting by creating different plan views, profile views, and detail views of proposed new fibre optic cable construction for Grade 1 crossings. I have also improved on my organizational skills and showed initiative by creating an MS Planner page for the hydro team to track and manage project resources and deadlines for a more efficient team. Furthermore, I have obtained data extraction skills by collecting, organizing, and transferring data from the utility pole design software, QuickPole. I have also acquired proficient skills with ikeGPS software by gathering surveyed information for the drafting of the new fibre optic cable permits. In addition, I have built on my project management skills by completing a Project Manager Professional (PMP) course enrolled in by Mobia Technology Innovations and obtaining a Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certificate by the Project Management Institue (PMI). Furthermore, as team lead of 13 employees, I was able to demonstrate strong leadership skills by training new employees, authorizing time sheets, and continuously providing support, guidance, and feedback to the team. I was also able to strengthen my creativity by creating PowerPoint presentations of Mobia news, updates, and health and safety topics. In addition to creating the presentations, I strengthened my presentation skills by presenting the Mobia news, updates, and health and safety topic slideshows to my team. Overall, it has been a beneficial experience where I can take the skills that I have gathered and apply it to my career as an engineering intern.
Junior Engineer
Civil Engineering (Project Scheduler) Co-Op Student
For my second co-op work term at Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA), I had the position of Civil Engineering (Project Scheduler) Co-op Student, working with the Enterprise Project Management Office department. As a Project Scheduler Co-op Student at WDBA, my job was to support the Senior Project Scheduler in the ongoing analysis and updates of the master schedule activities related to the Gordie Howe International Bridge project and to help identify areas of criticality within the schedules. My main duty was to collect and organize data from the scheduling software, Primavera P6, in order to create visuals illustrating important variances in activities within the construction schedules for the four components of the bridge. By collecting this data, I was able to create summary and chart visuals on Excel and PowerPoint to illustrate progress and/or any variances in the activities related to the construction of the four components of the bridge. Furthermore, I was able to gain beginner skills using the visualization software, Power BI. I learned how to create visualizations on Power BI, such as line graphs, bar charts and drawings for dashboard reports, which would communicate progress in the construction of the bridge.Overall, by having the opportunity to be a Project Scheduler student at WDBA, I was able to expand my knowledge and learn many new skills to aid me in my future career as a Civil Engineer. I was able to learn how to use the scheduling software, Primavera P6, in great detail, the visualization software, Power BI, and strengthen my skills in Excel and PowerPoint. I was able to learn more about the construction of a bridge and the tasks that go into a large project such as this. Working at WDBA has allowed me to challenge myself and make connections with my academic concepts and work duties. Throughout the course of my term, I have been able to solidify skills and learn new skills, as well as increase my knowledge of scheduling and engineering.
Civil Engineering (Project Scheduler) Co-Op Student
My Co-op experience at the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) has been a very interesting and valuable one. As the Project Scheduler Co-op Student, I was given the opportunity of learning a new program, Primavera P6. P6 is a great program to track the scheduling of large construction projects. Therefore, I learned how to use P6 very well while working at WDBA, as I referred to it for many tasks. P6 allowed me to see the dates construction activities were being completed, their duration, calendar, and much more. I learned how to analyze the given data and gantt charts on P6, how to create a project from scratch, and look for monthly updates and specific activities.By using P6, my job was to communicate the progress of the construction of the bridge to schedule management. This was essentially achieved by attaining the correct construction activities in P6 and their corresponding dates and displaying the timeline in a graphic visual created on Excel as a gantt chart or PowerPoint. This allowed me to improve on my Microsoft Office skills and helped me become better at retrieving, analyzing and transferring data.Furthermore, I was given the task of creating visuals of the bridge, the Canadian and US Port of Entries and the Michigan Interchange. This was achieved through PowerPoint or Excel by labeling and communicating the start and finish dates of the different parts of those four components. By creating these different visuals, this allowed for a way to communicate the construction timeline of the different parts the bridge to management. I was able to improve on my creativity and my communication skills in order to learn how to create visuals that were communicating the proper goal and by doing so in an organized way that was understandable to others, while aesthetically pleasing. Overall, my time at WDBA has taught me many knew skills in which I feel would be beneficial to my future career as a Civil Engineer, and it has been a great experience.
Civil Engineering Co-Op Student
My involvement during my co-op term as the Civil Engineering Co-op Student at the Town of Kingsville has helped me develop many skills that I feel would be beneficial to future Civil Engineering positions. For example, by continuously performing indemnity inspections at multiple homes and buildings, I was able to learn how to interact in relations with the public in a way that represented the Town in a positive light. Furthermore, I gained initiative and time management skills by creating my own daily schedules, planning and prioritizing my daily tasks and performing these tasks each day independently. With this being said, each of those tasks were accomplished with high quality, efficiency and in a timely manner. Furthermore, I was able to improve my knowledge with multiple websites such as ArcGIS, Pavemon, and City Works and furthermore, learn how to read and analyze lot service sheets, which aided me when performing indemnities. Due to attaining these effective skills, over the summer I was able to successfully complete hundreds of indemnity inspections.Furthermore, on the job I was given the opportunity of performing traffic counts. This was where I placed a traffic counter radar at a different road daily, in order to obtain the Average Annual Daily Traffic value. This helped the engineer know which roads were the busiest and by knowing the pavement condition of each of those roads, helped determine which roads had to be repaved first. By performing this task and observing the steps taken to determine the conditions of roads, I increased my knowledge regarding civil construction, learned how to successfully install a traffic counter, extract and analyze data from a radar, as well as how to transfer and organize the data onto Excel.Overall, my co-op experience at the Town of Kingsville has been a very beneficial and educational one, and I look forward to increasing my knowledge as an aspiring Civil Engineer.
