About Clarence Stringer
There is no denying the leap from Industrial Engineer to Scuba Instructor is quite dramatic. Truthfully, I never saw it coming. There was no "final straw” moment where I stormed out of the profession after 20 plus years and into a new life. Quite the opposite, I enjoyed my prior profession. The problem solving and accompanying sense of accomplishment was always rewarding. As I changed careers (because of this serendipitous offer), I found my engineering background advantageous in addressing my new responsibilities.Officially, I am the Marine Operations Coordinator at the Center for Marine Resource Studies of The School for Field Studies (SFS) in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Trying getting all of that on a business card. SFS is an incredible organization offering Study Abroad programs for U.S. based undergraduate students in multiple countries. Our fieldwork is primarily marine based and that's where I come in. I am responsible for all marine operations and logistics including:* Scheduling boat usage* Boat operation and maintenance* Boat handling training for staff* Breathing air compressor operation and maintenance* Creating and maintaining moorings in the MPA* SCUBA cylinder visual inspection* SCUBA equipment servicing and repair* SCUBA InstructionYes, I love everything about my job. However, teaching SCUBA is my favorite responsibility. I love giving students the opportunity to explore the underwater world which I so thoroughly enjoy. I also like to say I enjoy imparting lessons I've learned and inspiring our students.
