DIF is a global non-profit organization dedicated to development of emerging standards and open source technical components for the decentralized identity ecosystem. Much of this work incorporates World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Recommendations for Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) and Verifiable Credentials (VCs). Verifiable credentials represent “statements made by an issuer in a tamper-evident and privacy-respecting manner.” If this sounds revolutionary to you, it is.DIF is an engineering-driven organization focused on developing the foundational elements necessary to establish an open ecosystem for decentralized identity and ensure interoperability between all participants. You may have heard the term, Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI), used in conjunction with Decentralized Identity. The desired outcomes for SSI and Decentralized Identity overlap. SSI is a concept and guiding principle of how we can build the next generation of the Internet with users at the center, in control of their identities and data. As the open standards and open-source components mature, SSI adoption is advancing, with private sector and governments leading the way to co-create frameworks and regulations.
