Sport has always been a huge part of my identity. On lacrosse fields and netball courts I learned valuable life skills like leadership, teamwork, communication, problem-solving and resilience. Sport satisfied my natural competitiveness and fuelled my ambition.My desire to learn and grow has always driven my career: from successfully pitching a global exchange program to the Saatchi & Saatchi Australia board as a 20-year-old; to leading a campaign strapping AFL legend, Michael Long, to the wing of a moving biplane; and becoming one of the first two women on Gemba’s board.I’m proud of the latter, as gender equality is something I feel strongly about. Whilst I didn’t notice I was the only girl on the under 11s baseball team, I am very aware when I’m the only woman in the boardroom. Now I have two daughters, it’s even more important for me to make a meaningful difference for women in business, particularly working mothers. Empathy is an integral part of my DNA, and my approach to business is people-first. I encourage my team to play to their strengths, as that’s when we are at our best. I believe that organisations with strong values and a people-first mentality generate great culture and ultimately business results. A fellow Board member described me as being like Wonder Woman – “part peaceful diplomat, part raging warrior”. It’s an apt description, and one that stuck. I always try to bring my strengths – a growth mindset, my agency as a woman, commercial acumen, and empathy – to everything I do professionally.
