I am a PhD student in Applied Mathematics. I am working on multi-scale modeling and numerical simulations of sorption kinetics. In particular I am considering a model for the diffusion of particles in a region with an oscillating spherical obstacle-trap (a bubble). The model replaces the effect of the potential that represents the bubble by suitable boundary conditions. The development of efficient numerical methods for such a problem and the effective treatment of the multiple scales involved is the main topic of my PhD thesis, which is carried out in collaboration with a group from the Chemistry and Physics Departments of universities of Catania and Milan. Lately I am working on the multiscale challenge in time because the bubble oscillates with a frequency of the order of hundreds Hz, while the diffusion time scale is of the order of thousands seconds. IIapplied the theory of averaging through a suitable time-dependent change of variable, considering also a micro-macro approach to the system. In addition to the particles-trap interaction I tried to describe the interaction among the diffusing particles. The idea is describing the diffusant as a dissociable species into univalent anions and cations. An approximation of 'Quasi-Neutral Limit' is valid far from the bulk. Close to the trap a new boundary condition is obtained from the Coulomb's field and conservative properties.
