About Clark Miller

Modern societies are organized around a modest number of large technological systems--energy, food, water, transportation, infrastructure, communication--that are increasingly unsustainable and drivers of profound inequality. While we know how to innovate new technology devices, we need new leadership and new ideas focused on how to innovate at scale, across whole systems and whole societies, in a way that promotes the creation of sustainable, thriving, and just human communities.Expertise: Science and technology policy and leadership, management of energy transitions, analysis and design of knowledge systems, analysis of complex socio-technological systems, theories of globalization and international governance

I'm so proud of everything that we've accomplished in the school's first four years. What a wild ride. It's a pleasure to be able to step into my new role and let others step up into the school's leadership. My thanks to everyone in the school who's contributed to making the last four years some of the most exciting in my life...-----------------------ASU's newest knowledge enterprise has finally launched! With over 20 faculty and 150 professional and PhD students, the School for the Future of Innovation in Society (SFIS) is an exciting new endeavor devoted to fashioning new approaches to innovation that transcend the limits of existing models, enhance sustainability, social responsibility, and resilience; reduce inequality; and confront complex societal challenges that cannot be narrowed to problems of technoscientific innovation.SFIS brings together a great array of educational programs, including the PhD in Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology and master's degrees in Global Technology and Development, Science and Technology Policy, and Applied Ethics (with concentrations in biomedical and health ethics and science and engineering ethics). An undergraduate program is under development.SFIS is also significantly expanding its research capabilities, adding several significant new research centers, including the Center for Education and Training in Science and Society, the Center for Energy & Society, and the Risk Innovation Laboratory. Check back often to see what we're up to next.I welcome everyone to have a look and then to come and join the fun. http://sfis.asu.edu

I chair the PhD Program in Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology: a unique, ambitious, interdisciplinary initiative to understand what it means for humanity that today's societies are permeated by science and technology. We come from the humanities and social sciences, the sciences, and engineering. We come from non-profits, policy, business, communication, and education. Together, we pursue a common goal: to rethink how people fit into the worlds of science and technology so that we can create better human outcomes, solve the 21st Century's grand challenges, innovate more responsibly and responsively to human needs, and fashion more just and livable societies.I also direct the Master's of Science & Technology Policy program, a network of globally-engaged young leaders working in industry, government, and non-profits to upgrade institutional strategies for managing science, technology, and innovation. Our graduates work across an incredibly diverse range of fields, including renewable energy, STEM education, space policy, information systems, health innovation, sustainability, defense and aerospace, and more. For five years (2007-12), I served as the Associate Director for the Center for Nanotechnology in Society, a $10 million National Science Foundation research center focused on the social and ethical dimensions of research in nanotechnology.
